What is it?
Rose-Hip Vital® powder contains a patented compound which is activated during the patented drying process of the Rosehips used in Rose-Hip Vital® (Rosa Canina). This active compound discourages the accumulation of excess white blood cells in the joints, and is the subject of more than 30 scientific studies including 9 clinical trials.
The active compound was discovered 9 years ago in Denmark and is exclusive to Rose-Hip Vital® branded powder. Research indicates that the patented rosehip powder helps reduce joint pain and stiffness as well as improve flexibility and mobility. It is the same registered active compound found in the human version Rose-Hip Vital® called GOPO® . Rose-Hip Vital® Canine is also now available.
How does it work?
A certain proportion of white blood cells are involved in the inflammatory process by ‘cleaning’ inflamed joints. In large numbers these cells can release toxic free radicals which further damage the joints. The more inflamed the joint becomes, the more white blood cells are attracted to it.
A unique active compound is isolated during a patented drying process used in the manufacturing process of Rose-Hip Vital® branded powder. This compound stops excess white blood cells from gathering, thereby breaking the cycle of inflammation. The vitamin C and antioxidant combination in Rose-Hip Vital provide significant support to the immune system which helps discourage the destruction of joint cartilage as well as providing a wide range of health benefits.
The active compound found in Rose-Hip Vital® Equine actually discourages large numbers of white blood cells from accumulating in the joint and slows down the production of toxic free radicals. This helps to:
- Protect cartilage from damage
- Reduce joint pain and stiffness and increase mobility
- Reduce the consumption of traditional pain killers
- Improve general joint health and wellbeing.
A randomized, placebo-controlled, parallel, double-blinded study on the immune system of horses, their working capacity and behaviour resulted in a decline in neutrophil chemotaxis which indicated enhanced anti-inflammatory activity in horses. Rose-Hip Vital powder also significantly improved antioxidant capacity when estimated as chemilumenescence1-3. The same patented powder is scientifically proven to have a direct protective impact on cartilage cells4.
“I have used Rosehip Vital Equine for over 18 months in performance horses of all disciplines and continue to be impressed by the results. It appears to have useful properties resulting in a reduction of pain, inflammation and even lameness in a number of horses with joint cartilage degeneration. Some of the most noticeable results have been seen in older horses with chronic lameness conditions. Additional benefits include appetite stimulation and reduction of inflammatory and allergic skin conditions.”

Exercise and the associated increase in oxygen consumption and increased flux through the aerobic energy generating pathways are linked with an increased production of free radicals. When the production of free radicals overwhelms the body’s antioxidant defences, oxidative stress can occur with subsequent deleterious effect on cellular structures1.
“Rose-Hip Vital Equine has become a key component of our rehabilitation programs. We were first recommended to try the product by one of our vets and have since incorporated it into the feeds of all our racing thoroughbreds with joint issues. We have noted definite improvements in lameness especially with horses suffering from palmar and plantar condylar disease.”

Rose-Hip Vital has shown anti-inflammatory properties and improved the flexibility of the hip and knee joints and reduced pain in humans suffering from the early as well as the late stages of osteoarthritis.4,5
A trial published in the Scandinavian Journal of Rheumatology 2005 showed that 82% of patients reported a reduction in pain after 3 weeks of active treatment with a standardised Rosehip Powder (Rose-Hip Vital manufactured by Hyben Vital, Denmark). Pain was alleviated to such an extent that 40% reduced their consumption of paracetamol.5
Further evidence of the effectiveness of the standardised Rosehip Powder (Rose-Hip Vital manufactured by Hyben Vital, Denmark) on chronic joint conditions has been reported by the Phytomedicine Journal of 2004. Here, 66% of patients taking the standardised Rosehip powder reported a reduction in joint pain. Interestingly, patients also reported an improvement in general wellbeing, including mood, sleep quality and energy6.
